About us

ABOUT US

Balbi Soprani was established by Francesco Capetta in the late’80s as the estate winery of Cantine Capetta. A great expert familiar with every inch of the Moscato countryside, Francesco Capetta purchased some of the best pieces of land in the Santo Stefano Belbo and Cossano Belbo famous for growing quality grapes. Balbi Soprani’s mission has since been to make the most of the grape varietals of Piedmont by making wines from the most noble, prestigious varietals.

Excellence in the vineyard, in the heart of the Moscato hills

STYLE

Balbi Soprani has chosen to underline the typical qualities of the best grape varietals of Piedmont, making the most of their intrinsic features and producing wines that are clearly the product of the terroir. Balbi Soprani wines are recognizable, elegant and harmonious, paying homage to Piedmont’s long tradition of making naturally top-quality wines.

GREAT WINES FROM PRESTIGIOUS VINEYARDS

Balbi Soprani has chosen some of the best land in the Moscato hills to plant its vineyards, practicing sustainable agriculture and demonstrating respect for the local landscape and environment, making quality wines through careful and painstaking work in the vineyard.

A CONSTANT PRESENCE IN THE VINEYARD

Expert agronomics and a daily presence in the vineyard ensure that vines are grown in a way which makes the most of the natural expressive potential of the varietals, with complete respect for the timing and rhythms of nature. Everything is done by hand in the vineyard. Grapes are harvested and put into little ventilated boxes to be taken to the winery immediately, preventing micro-fermentation and oxidation: only the healthiest, perfectly ripe grapes go into Balbi Soprani wines.

Prestigious vineyards, top quality grapes, and highly expressive, pleasing wines: Balbi Soprani’s quality wines are the result of the winery’s ability to draw on the area’s natural vocation for excellence which underlines the characteristic qualities of the wines of Piedmont.”

The vineyards

THE VINEYARDS

Balbi Soprani cultivates 21 hectares of land in the municipalities of Santo Stefano Belbo and Cossano Belbo located in the hills of the Moscato d’Asti district. A land of exquisite beauty and ancient traditions which has been recognized as a World Heritage Site for its tradition of wine-making. Steep rocky slopes with an inclination of more than 50% follow one after another. The cultivation of the land might be called heroic requiring the slow and ongoing labour of building terraces to reclaim land from the dense forests and steep slopes and planting vineyards over the millennia.

Among the vines is the bare earth, open to the sky, stealing the sun from them by day. The sun burns all day up there, and the earth is limey: it can be seen in the dark.

Cesare Pavese
